I painted this for my sister in law for Christmas and wanted to share it with you. I enjoy painting Mt. Hood and I use my "Artist's License" to add interesting foregrounds......ie....the horses and riders.

Four sisters, one sister in law and one cousin donated 6x6 bird paintings for the Audubon Wild Bird Festival to be held Sept. 19th & 20th at Montgomery Park in Portland, OR.

Artists are: Mona/Chicadee, Donna/Meadowlark, Gaille/Raven, Loretta/humming birds, Julie/Flicker, Gisela/owl and Carol/Pelican.

The 180 6x6 donated paintings will be sold for $40.00 a piece starting Nov. 19th, ending on the 20th.

It was decided that we as the Columbia Arts Guild do a bit of advertising at the county fair and give out one free membership as an art award. Yesterday I met with her in Clatskanie before a meeting I had to attend. Her name is Mary Duvall and it was great to finally meet her face to face. I have had her on the email list for some time and had no idea who she was. Now I have a face to go with the name. Our decision to reach out at the fair was a very good one.

April 2011 Meeting

Tatting lesson at January Guild Meeting

Please join us for the January meeting at the Scappoose Senior Center., tomorrow, Sat. Jan. 15th at 10:00 a.m. Our featured activity is a lesson in shuttle tatting. I will have shuttles and thread for those who do not have them. You can purchase them for $4. There will be handouts showing the basic technique and a simple pattern for practice.

A second lesson is planned for the February meeting. Just as Rome was not built in a day, you don't learn to tat in an hour.

Hi, Just sharing a picture I worked on while painting with my sister and sister in law. My sister painted a hawk...and a fine job she did, and my sister in law painted a beach scene that turned out fine. Acrylics are new to them and I was helping them with the technique.

Type the name of your painting or whatever you want in there.
Click the insert image box that has a teeny tiny picture in it (between Link and left margin) on the tool bar of the posting page.
Add an image box appears.
Click browse. It searches your computer and you click on the picture you want to upload
It uploads and click ok.
After your picture appears in the new posting window you can write words about it or whatever.
Then you click publish post at the bottom.
If you see mistakes you can edit your post after.

Whew, what a challenge this was for me. It's another batik on rice paper. I prefolded and stained the paper before starting the batiking process. Hope this encourages others who are not very happy with their results to post them anyway. It's all a learning process :D

This is the first painting done in our winter project for the Portland Plein Air & Studio Painters. Hubby was BBQing dinner so I had only about 45 nimutes to work. The overall painting came out a bit more yellow than I like but it was fun to do.

Hi all,
This is my very first time posting anything on a blog. One must know what a blog was, before one can post on one.
fyi.....I will be camping with my sisters and our families this weekend and we are sure to come up with something new in art. One project is involving wood I've heard....and we are also going to set out with canvas and brush to paint plein aire. It's a real stretch for most of us....oh heck...all of us. It will be interesting for sure. If I can figure out how to post a picture....I'll try to do that for you after our camp out.

Well, Columbia Arts Guild, I've been following your discussion about a web site and felt remiss in not participating in the blog. So here's a little recent art from my house and the link to my cartoonstock.com archive. Cartoonstock is located in England, but the cartoons are available to anyone with an internet connection to use (for a fee) for anything from coasters to billboards. I have only submitted 3 'toons so far, so the money isn't quite rolling in - but I'm confident, it's only a matter of time...

The picture is a chunk of a greeting card design for RSVP Publishing in Maine. The owl was originally sporting a much smaller hat, but I was asked to enlarge his hat enough to go behind his ear tufts. Hmmmm. It probably took me 2 1/2 hours to figure out what someone who understood Photoshop would do in 5 minutes, but, ta da!, a bigger hat without a single change to my real-life on-paper art. I highly recommend Photoshop to keep Alzheimer's at bay.

Today there were only three of us at the Guild meeting. Autumn, Pam Elmore(new), and myself Maeona.

Pam does pottery so I let her know that she isn't alone and told her Teresa Knight and Jan Rentenaar and Pat Brame are all clay and pottery people around here and that there may be something happening for the summer with Pat.

We discussed the upcoming Sauerkraut Festival and the possibilities that there may fewer venders if the city can't work out insurance. They are asking the venders to provide their own and that is proving to be spendy for some.

I was able to contact Jim Westall about the guild purchasing his hanging walls and stands. He had to check in his garage but he says he has six walls and is checking for the legs and attachments. He will call me back about price.

I stopped in at the Library and reserved the room the Friday (Sept. 18th from 4-8 for art acceptance and set up) and the Day of the Festival (Sept. 19th from 10-6 for the show and sale) We will pick up the key on the Thursday before and drop it in the book drop when finished as the Library is closed during the Festival.

Jennifer please stop by in the next 7 days and pay for the room. Thanks!

Jennifer provided a letter and Autumn sent requests to Art Envy, Art Media, Art Supply Warehouse, Blick Art Materials, Cheap Joes, Columbia Art & Drafting Supply, Craft Warehouse, Dixie Art Supplies, Jerry' Artarama, Joann's Fabric and Craft Store, Michaels Craft Store, Muse Art & Design, and Utrecht Art Supplies requesting support for the show in the form of cash, gift certificates, or merchandise to be used as awards.

We are looking for suggestions for a Judge. With the short time frame of having only one day for the show we are looking at the judging actually happening during the show and awards announced late in the day when we do the People's Choice announcement as well. We know that is an unusual way to do it but the only way we see that might work. Help!

On the acceptance/hanging night (Sept. 18th from 4-8) is the time we need the most help! Please call me 503-543-7482 if you will be available for any of that time. Please help, it's only once a year, one day.

Another learning experience

Last months challenge in my watercolor group was a still life. How hard can it be? Smack a pear and some flowers on a table, drape a tablecloth behind and paint away.

Several artists posted photos of still life set ups and I truly loved the clean look of the photo. It was pretty much white and red with a clear little vase. With watercolor, the white is the paper. How Sweet it that? Sign me up!

So I did a little outline drawing of the vase and flowers on my watercolor paper. It's my usual routine. Just outline the shape and confirm placement, then paint.
Not so much.

I started mapping the whites, marking subtle color changes in the vase and then marking the highlights and reflections in the shadows.

Then I took my dip pen and frisket out and spent a great deal of time applying little blobs and lines to preserve the whites.

For a mostly "white" watercolor, there were tons of pencil marks. Painting didn't take too long but then I felt the need to remove the pencil marks. I used my trusty plastic eraser and was successful getting the annoying marks removed. Some of the color changed/lightened so I did a little more painting.

Warm thoughts.
In a month or less, the crocus should be up. Not long after that, narcissus and daffodils followed closely by these wonderful lily tulips. They even last a long time when cut and placed in a vase.

2008 Columbia Arts Guild Show

2008 Columbia Arts Guild Show report

The goal of this year show was to provide local artists with exposure to the public. The financial goal was to break even. Based on these two goals, the show was a huge success.

The show was held in the Scappoose Library meeting room. Melissa Gilbertsen created two very eye-catching signs. Balloons were attached to the signs to make them even more visable. They were placed on easels in front of the library and at the back door. We did not tally the number of people attending the show, but the traffic was impressive. 131 people took the time to vote for "The People's Choice" award. The winners were:

First place ribbon and $100. Big Horn Sheep by Annette Cunningham
Second place ribbon and $25. Broken Window by Ronnie Rardin

Congratulation also to Maeona Urban who sold her painting "Cafe in the Heat of the Day" and Jennifer Hanson who sold her stain glass mosaic called "Woman in the Wind."

This is the first year we did not hire judges. Having judges is preferable, but it adds a level of complexity that I was not willing to take on with so few Guild members available to help. If we can add them back in next year it would be great.

This is the first year we sold table space to artists. Two six foot tables and two eight foot tables were purchase for a total of $50. The tables were provided with the room. Having vendors worked very well. If we use the same space next year, we will probably need to limit it to three tables.

No you aren't the only one playing in here. I spent a little over a month with virtigo from an ear infection and couldn't paint, read, view the computer screen, etc. I'm back on track again now and lots to do. I have posted this here in the guild site for some input please before I post it to my website or show Kathy. Kathy is Hawaiian/Philipino and has very beautiful skin which I am totally struggling to get on canvas. Pay no attention to her hair or the portion of her arm the I started to include but decided that it distracted from the face and will turn to blouse later. What I am asking is "Do I have the skin to dark?" I do not want her to look African American but she does have a warmer browner tone than pale old me. Help.

The weather outside is frightful. I just did an art-related post to my blog at
http://pattykadel.blogspot.com so I thought I'd throw it on here, too. Twice, twice(!), in the last two months I have received my own artwork in joke emails. My signature, of course, had long since been disappeared... Hmpf!

Before it got covered in snow, here is what was happening in my backyard pond. The ice eventually came up to within a fraction of an inch of Froggy's lips. (Do frogs have lips?) Now he's buried in a foot of snow, so I hope he's still doing his job keeping the fish alive.

HELLO!? Am I the only one playing here?

I am done with my must do items and finally can get started on preparing for Christmas! It's relief and none too soon as I promised to paint all my greeting cards this year. It's a resolution I've kept so all the birthday and anniversary cards I sent this year have been 5 x 7 watercolor paintings.

I've started the Christmas Greetings and here are a few samples...I just need about 40 to cover my list!

Been splashing water and paint everywhere. This rose is 12 x 16. Largest watercolor I've done this year. Maybe the most fun, too. Won't see roses blooming again until late spring, this one will last me until then.

New Daytime Meeting

I have enjoyed the new daytime meetings at Joe's Cafe at ten in the mornings. I have a terrible time driving at night and haven't been able to participate as much as I would like. Last month there were only three of us showed up to chat art. This month there were six of us chatting when a fellow asked us if we were an art group. His name was Bruce and he also was an artist from Portland. He was waiting at the coffee shop while his partner was doing something in town. We had him pull up a chair and join us. We also had two people that we had made contact with at the annual show. We all had things to share about what we have been doing with our art. We discussed getting together to paint and we also discussed in brief, the possibility of having a studio tour in the future. It was great to see everyone!

They're everywhere! Signs of Fall - I have too many trees and right now I have too many fallen leaves all over the yard. Since my neighbors have few or no trees, I share the leaves with them...to help celebrate the season!

"Cafe in the Heat of Day"

Many of you already know that I sold this painting during the show at the Sauerkraut Festival show. That was a wonderful surprise for me besides getting to see some of you I hadn't for a while. You may be able to see it soon at the Old Town Cafe on E Columbia in Scappoose next to the police station. The owners of the cafe purchased it.

See you at the new 10 a.m. meeting time at the Joe's Cafe in St. Helens the third Wednesday if I can make it.

I haven't gone anywhere - honest! I've just been out of touch due to "crash" conditions. One good thing about the computer being down, I found time to do a few other things, HA!
I worked on a crochet project, read an art book from cover to cover and threw some paint around, too.

I participated in the Park Blocks annual event. Most of my time was spent painting buildings but about 20 minutes before quiting time. I couldn't resist painting this group. It was over 90 this day in the shade but it was fun afterward.

These are my Black Tie & Blue Jean trompe loeil leather oil paintings for the auction.

I use trompe loeil method for my Northwest Coast Native American style artwork so I thought I would try to use that for something else as well. The theme for the Black Tie is Western so I decided to try my hand at a leather tooling look. They put center pieces on the tables for sale. Last year they did art boots but I didn't get to do one. Had my hands full with other things. I'm glad to be able to do something even if it is small. Hope you are all having fun creating.

Here is another piece I have that I just love. There is a woman named Wendy in Scappoose that makes the pendants and I try to match the necklace part to the art glass. This piece is $40.00. I have lots of pieces I still need to create so I will post as I complete something.

Calendar of artist events

I attended the May 21st Art Guild Meeting at the St. Helens High School art room. Present were Carolyn Curtis, Lee, Kathy Fellows, Alan Coppock, and myself. That was the last meeting of the year there because school will be closed for the summer. Darcie has offered to let us come to her house. We saw Alan's latest painting, we all shared our trading card size pictures, and caught up on what each other had been doing. Kathy had photos she transfered to cloth by using her printer. It was suggested that I add the artist outings in here that I was aware of at this point. So here they are.

May 27th there is a gathering of artists at Schreiners Iris Garden near Salem from approximately 10:00 am. Bring your medium and join the other artists. All levels. There is also a second date for that on Thursday May 29th. Artists from Portland and Eugene will be there that day.

First Tuesdays in Hillsboro from 6-8 p.m. is Artwalk. Many of the stores on and around Main street in the Old Town area have artists displaying their works. There is also Sequoia Gallery and Art Envy Supply store there. If you are interested in showing your work during first Tuesday contact Art Envy.

There will be artists from around 10:00 am until noonish in the Crystal Springs area close to Reed College and the Portland Rhododendron Garden Tuesday June 3rd.

Artists will gather in the Portland Rose Garden about 10:00 am Thursday June 12th.

There will also be a "paintout" (that includes all mediums, pencil, pastels, etc.) Thursday June 19th in Laurelhurst Park in Portland beginning about 9:00 am.

Kathy Fisher from Scappoose will be included in a group reception at Kingstad Gallery in Beaverton for an iconographic show the 24th of June.

July is again First Tuesday in Hillsboro.

The 26th of June will be a "paintout" at Lake Sacagawea in Longview starting at 10:00 am.

Utrecht Art Supplies is hosting their second annual Plein Air in the Pearl July 13th. Contact them for more information regarding that day and the possibility of hanging your work in their show.

Then on July 19th the Hillsboro Art and Culture Center is sponsoring their second Plein Air Competition.

Squashed Marbles. I fell in love with these glass pieces because at first they reminded me of marbles. Sometimes now though I look at them and see "Alien" faces in them. Look at the one on the right. Im sick and twisted I know, or I have boys and they have corrupted my mind. I still need to get into the beading room after tax season. I will post more as I complete stuff.

So, I'm trying to get motivated to draw again. My bathroom is being remodeled and today I took all the tools off the floor of my studio and moved them into... the kitchen. Not better, you say? Fortunately, I care more about someone buying cartoons than being able to make a three course meal. If anyone has an amusing insight about St Patricks Day, Graduation, or Administrative Assistants, I'm all ears.

Hi artist friends I know, and others I don't! What a great idea. I rarely seem to make it to Guild happenings but I support in spirit. Cyber-participation is great for me and my wacky schedule. I'm nearing completion with a graduate certificate in Graphic Design (w/ Dig. Photo. concentration), starting preliminary work on a product line (cards, magnets, mugs ??) which may go nowhere! :-) Taking a lot of shots with my new camera (finally "went digital" - love it) I have a portfolio on-line if anyone wants to see. -kate ;-)
